THE #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

“Told in rotating points of view, this Tilt-A-Whirl of a novel brims with jangly tension – an undeniably engrossing guessing game.”  — Vogue

"[A] clever, cliff-hanger-filled thriller." — People

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Guest List comes a new locked room mystery, set in a Paris apartment building in which every resident has something to hide…

Jess needs a fresh start. She’s broke and alone, and she’s just left her job under less than ideal circumstances. Her half-brother Ben didn’t sound thrilled when she asked if she could crash with him for a bit, but he didn’t say no, and surely everything will look better from Paris. Only when she shows up – to find a very nice apartment, could Ben really have afforded this? – he’s not there.

The longer Ben stays missing, the more Jess starts to dig into her brother’s situation, and the more questions she has. Ben’s neighbors are an eclectic bunch, and not particularly friendly. Jess may have come to Paris to escape her past, but it’s starting to look like it’s Ben’s future that’s in question.

The socialite – The nice guy – The alcoholic – The girl on the verge – The concierge

Everyone's a neighbor. Everyone's a suspect. And everyone knows something they’re not telling.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of February 2022: Lucy Foley follows up 2020’s excellent The Guest List by transporting readers to Paris for another unsettling tale. Out of a job and broke, Jess opts for free bed and board at her half-brother Ben’s Paris apartment. Except when she arrives, Ben is nowhere to be found though he doesn’t appear to have left the building. Able to get into his (suspiciously) upscale apartment, Jess is keenly aware that the building’s other residents aren’t exactly thrilled by her presence. Foley specializes in clever takes on closed circle mysteries and in The Paris Apartment, the list of suspects in Ben’s disappearance is confined to the residents of the building—from the concierge to an elderly woman—though the building itself may be guarding secrets, too. A slow-burn thriller with a dark, glowering plot, The Paris Apartment is another serving of escapism which takes a turn that will leave readers breathless. —Vannessa Cronin, Amazon Editor

Review

“Told in rotating points of view, this Tilt-A-Whirl of a novel brims with jangly tension – an undeniably engrossing guessing game.” — Vogue

“Another page-turning thriller in which the story and its characters are as unique and beguiling as the city itself. … [Foley] keeps readers on their toes with a fast-paced story in which she does a stellar job of juggling the past and the present with multiple narratives without getting bogged down. You can feel the urgency in her prose. … A thrilling read.” — USA Today

“A transcontinental whodunnit with chic panache, this page-turner will keep you up into the wee hours of the night.” — Good Morning America

“Extremely evocative, with a richly-drawn atmosphere you can cut with a knife. Short of a trip to Paris, the next best thing is surely to settle down with a bottle of French wine and devour The Paris Apartment...Stylish, suspenseful, claustrophobic and menacing.” — Alex Michealides, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Silent Patient

“With characters suspicious and unlikable in their own way and a fun twist, you’re in for a dark and moody escape.” — NPR.org

“Paris is always a good idea…until it isn’t. … You can expect some plot twists and Agatha Christie-esque whodunit vibes.” — The Skimm

"The streets of Paris have never looked darker, more opulent, or more sinister than in Lucy Foley's gloriously twisty new novel." — Ruth Ware

"Another clever, cliff-hanger-filled thriller from the author of The Guest List." — People

The Paris Apartment is a charged, charming thriller that'll have us all eyeing the neighbors a bit skeptically, no matter where it is we live.” — Town & Country

“Lucy Foley keeps you guessing with multiple first-person narrators and short chapters designed to leave you hanging.” — Associated Press

The Paris Apartment grabbed me from the get-go. … A little bit Emily in Paris meets Rear Window to me. It’s totalement satisfying in the end.” — Vulture

"If you binged Only Murders in the Building, then this book sounds like it may be right up your alley.” — Buzzfeed

“Foley turns up the creep factor and expertly plays with our preconceptions to make this an involving follow-up to her 2020 best-seller, The Guest List.” — Air Mail

The Paris Apartment is cleverly and intricately plotted, told from several different points of view and occasionally moving forward and backward chronologically. This gives readers just enough clues to allow them to try to solve the mystery while continually pulling the rug out from under them so they remain off-balanced and surprised. The book takes a classic formula but makes it feel fresh and modern using contemporary storytelling techniques, ensuring that readers will come away from it eagerly awaiting Foley’s next fiendishly clever puzzle of a mystery.” — Bookreporter.com

“Another glamorous mystery with a sprawling, secretive cast—namely, the inhabitants of the titular apartment complex.” — BookPage

"Will keep you guessing until the very end. It may be pure fiction, but fans of true crime novels will gobble it right up." — Reader's Digest

“But it’s not only the intelligent and riveting storyline or the carefully conceived and fully developed characters that elevates this book far above mundane thrillers. Foley’s precise prose rings with echoes of her British background and the elegance of her French setting. … With confidence and cunning, Foley provides pleasures that chill as they captivate.” — Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star

“An atmospheric thriller wrapped in a mystery, lots of mysteries. … Her writing is spare, her plotting intricate, and she is stingy with clues along the way — as a good mystery/thriller writer should be. I recommend The Paris Apartment for fans of this genre who especially enjoy being in the dark for most of the book and quite surprised at the end.” — Florida Times-Union

“Foley is the master of the slow reveal, and gives a little bit at a time to lead up to the big reveal. You never quite know what to expect, which makes the plot even more exciting. This well-written and entertaining read is perfect for fans of Ruth Ware, Agatha Christie, and Foley’s previous books.” — Mystery and Suspense Magazine

“Foley’s writing is simple and immersive, marrying the elegance and dark undertones of Paris with a reckless but determined protagonist to create an intriguing mystery. The Paris Apartment is a sinister puzzle you’ll love solving.” — The Harvard Crimson

"A brilliantly twisty thriller that keeps the reader guessing right to the end." — Irish Times

"[Foley] is already the high priestess of the whodunnit, blending intrigue and plots wound tight as magnet coils, with healthy dashes of glamour." — Irish Independent

"Perfect for fans of Hulu's Only Murders in the Building."Teen Vogue

Hello and welcome to my author page! Whether you’ve read my books before, are thinking of trying one out or just landed here by chance (or fate…?) it’s great to see you!

I’m the No.1 New York Times and Sunday Times bestselling author of The Hunting Party, The Guest List and most recently The Midnight Feast. It’s set at a luxury new countryside resort built on old secrets beside an ancient wood. The opening weekend takes place during a heatwave (and with a big summer solstice celebration) and temperatures and tensions are rising, the local community is incensed by the influx of wealthy newcomers and some unexpected guests have come to stay. Then a body is found…

A little about me: I always knew I wanted to work with books somehow, so I studied English at university before working in a bookshop, a literary agency and then as a fiction editor at a big publishing house, during which time I realised that every book starts off as a messy first draft full of plot holes and mistakes. I thought I’d have a go at writing myself — the result of which was my first historical fiction novel, The Book of Lost and Found. I wrote two more historicals, The Invitation and Last Letter to Istanbul, before turning to the dark side and writing my first crime thriller, The Hunting Party: my first Sunday Times and New York Times bestseller and Waterstones Book of the Month, set over New Year’s Eve at a remote, snowy spot in the Scottish Highlands.

Next came The Guest List, a murder mystery set at a wedding on an island off the coast of Ireland, which was a Reese’s Book Club pick, a Goodreads Choice Awards winner, a Waterstones Book of the Month, and has sold over three million copies. Then came The Paris Apartment, which is a number one New York Times bestseller and Sunday Times bestseller.

My books have been translated into over 40 languages and all three murder mysteries are currently being adapted for TV and film.

I’ve also written a short story for the brand new Marple collection, a brand new series of short stories featuring Agatha Christie’s legendary detective Jane Marple, alongside writers such as Val McDermid, Kate Mosse, Alyssa Cole, Ruth Ware and Leigh Bardugo, out September 2022 to coincide with Christie’s birthday!

Fast read
Told in short chapters through multiple POVs, in the latest Lucy Foley’s thriller we follow Jess Hadley, a bartender at the Copacabana bar in Brighton, England, who finds herself in a difficult situation in which she needs to leave everything behind. So she decides to go to Paris to visit her half-brother Ben. While Jess is on her way, her brother leaves her a message giving her instructions on how to proceed when she gets into the building. But when Jess finally arrives, Ben is nowhere to be found. His apartment is much more she could have imagined. How Ben could afford such a fancy apartment being a freelance journalist? He also left his wallet behind and Jess decides to ask around his whereabouts. The reader is left in the dark for most of the story. It is impossible not to be reminded of the Hulu series Only Murders in the Building, without the podcast element, while reading this novel. Just like in the series, everyone living in this building becomes a suspect. The building holds a lot of secrets, and secret passages, and the protagonist soon realizes that things are not what they seem. The characters are well developed. Foley gives us a background story of Jess and Ben, and their different upbringing. After their mother died, the siblings were split up. Ben was adopted by a wealthy couple and had a comfortable life while Jess lived from one foster home to another. There are some unexpected twists and her writing flows. I like the author’s ability to create a creepy atmosphere. It was my first Lucy Foley and I enjoyed reading this one. I also liked how the tension was built slowly but there was nothing in this novel that really wowed me. I believe The Paris Apartment would be an enjoyable read for fans of mystery/thriller in general. It is an ok book, one that will entertain the reader without being extraordinary. Now I am curious to read more from this author.

Oh, what a deliciously tangled web Lucy Foley weaves! The Paris Apartment is a moody, intoxicating romp through the shadowy corridors of an elegant yet ominous Parisian building. Imagine Clue, but with croissants, suspicious neighbours, and secrets stacked higher than the Eiffel Tower.

Told in rotating perspectives (like an emotional game of musical chairs), this audiobook kept me guessing until the very last breath. Jess is the perfectly flawed protagonist—a bit of a mess, wholly relatable, and determined to uncover what happened to her slippery half-brother Ben. And the neighbours? Positively crawling with red flags, each more enigmatic and unnerving than the last. There’s an almost Hitchcockian elegance to the way Foley builds suspense with every passing chapter.

Clare Corbett and the ensemble of narrators are utterly sublime. The performance adds layers of tension and charm that make it feel like you’re eavesdropping through keyholes and whispering through wine glasses.

In short: Read it. Listen to it. Then double-lock your doors and side-eye your neighbours. The Paris Apartment is a riveting, glamorous, and sinister delight.

Bravo, Lucy Foley. You’ve done it again.

    𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰:
I LOVE THIS BOOK! I thought about this book when I wasn’t reading it, my mind would wonder about what would happen next and what the final scene would entail. It was an easy read and I didn’t want it to be over. This was my first @lucyfoleyauthor novel and I purchased her two previous novels before I finished this one. I am suddenly a huge fan!

    𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐋𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐝:
➖The setting, I love all things Paris and while I don’t feel it made a huge part of the book I enjoyed it.
➖The story wasn’t one that felt forced. The story unfolded gently and with good pacing.
➖The characters were very diverse and they all surprised me in one fashion or another. The concierge was my favorite.
    ➖I really enjoyed the ending

    𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐍𝐢𝐭𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠:
➖There weren’t as many intense scenes as I had hoped for originally. This isn’t necessarily negative but I was hoping my blood pressure would have been raised a few more times.
➖In hindsight I wish the hidden door, the dumbwaiter, and the cellar were more present throughout. I think I anticipated they would have a larger role once we learn of their existence.
➖The changing perspectives makes for great reading, but in some situations I felt I wanted some more depth.

The story, especially in the first two thirds, was very slow with nothing much happening. It was interesting though and I kept reading. Jess and the rest of the characters are not likeable. Jess had it rough growing up and some of her behavior, you could surmise, is a result of that but she had me shaking my head more than once.
Apart from the building where much of the story takes place, there's not much atmosphere and that detracted from the narrative.

Some of the answers concerning Ben's disappearence and the residents of the other apartments. were revealed early on and it was not too difficult to put together most of what heppened, not all of it. The end moved along much more quickly but I would not consider this a thriller, just a mystery. It was a quick read which was a plus for me.

This atmospheric thriller masterfully weaves together mystery and psychological suspense in the heart of Paris. Set in a grand but weathered apartment building in a chic arrondissement, the story follows Jess, who arrives in Paris to stay with her half-brother Ben, only to find him mysteriously missing. The building's eccentric residents - each harboring their own secrets - become both potential allies and suspects as Jess delves deeper into her brother's disappearance.

The author excels at creating a palpable sense of unease, using the apartment building itself as a character. The ornate yet decaying structure, with its hidden passages and shadowy corners, perfectly mirrors the layers of deceit uncovered throughout the narrative. The dual timeline structure is particularly effective, gradually revealing how past events connect to present-day mysteries.

The characterization is rich and nuanced - from the enigmatic concierge to the wealthy antiques dealer upstairs, each resident feels fully realized rather than merely suspicious. The prose captures both the glamour and the gritty underbelly of Paris, avoiding typical tourist clichés while still evoking a strong sense of place.

While some plot threads could be more tightly woven, and certain revelations might strike seasoned mystery readers as predictable, the overall atmosphere and psychological tension maintain engagement throughout. The pacing occasionally slows in the middle sections, but the final act delivers satisfying payoffs to carefully planted clues. For fans of character-driven suspense with a strong sense of setting, this novel offers an immersive escape into the darker side of the City of Light.

If Cluedo was a book, this would be it.

The FMC was what kept me from giving 5 stars. Jess was just too vanilla and I couldn't get myself to care for her. In fact, I felt that all the other characters were more interesting than Jess. Sophie and the Concierge were my favorites.

The whodunnit and the reveal at the end were good. But TBH, I mostly read it for the Paris vibes.
