4.6 out of 5 stars 18,295 ratings

An enchanting collection containing the first three novels in New York Times bestselling author Julia Quinn’s beloved Bridgerton series set in Regency England—The Duke and I, The Viscount Who Loved Me, and An Offer from a Gentlemannow a series created by Shondaland for Netflix

The Duke and I
When Daphne Bridgerton and Simon Basset, Duke of Hastings, agree to a fake courtship, they think they’ve found the perfect solution to their problems. Romantically associated with one of London’s most desirable catches, Daphne’s prospects among the ton will soar. For avowed bachelor Simon, an attachment to Daphne will deter would-be brides and their ambitious mamas. Their plan works like a charm—at first. But amid the glittering, gossipy, cut-throat world of London’s elite, there is only one certainty: love ignores every rule. . .

The Viscount Who Loved Me
London's most elusive bachelor, Anthony Bridgerton is determined to wed. But one obstacle stands in his way—his intended's older sister, Kate Sheffield, who is driving Anthony mad with her determination to stop the betrothal. Kate is quite sure that reformed rakes do not make the best husbands, and Anthony Bridgerton is the most wicked rogue of them all. She’s determined to protect her sister—even as she fears she may not be able to resist the reprehensible and oh so desirable rake herself . . .

An Offer from a Gentleman
Sophie Beckett never dreamed she'd be able to sneak into Lady Bridgerton's famed masquerade ball—or that she would be spinning in the arms of her "Prince Charming"—the debonair and devastatingly handsome Benedict Bridgerton. But when the clock strikes midnight, Sophie’s enchanting evening ends. Since that night Benedict has been able to think of nothing but the bewitching young woman, and he’s sworn to find and wed his mystery miss. Yet will another unexpectedly steal his heart—and his chance for a fairy tale love?

#1 New York Times bestselling author Julia Quinn loves to dispel the myth that smart women don't read (or write) romance, and in 2001 she did so in grand fashion, appearing on the game show The Weakest Link and walking away with the $79,000 jackpot. She displayed a decided lack of knowledge about baseball, country music, and plush toys, but she is proud to say that she aced all things British and literary, answered all of her history and geography questions correctly, and knew that there was a Da Vinci long before there was a code. Ms. Quinn is one of only sixteen members of Romance Writers of America's Hall of Fame, her books have been translated into 29 languages, and she currently lives with her family in the Pacific Northwest.

After watching the Netflix series I decided to read these and did I ever... I read the entire series plus the anthologies (yes you read that right over 25 books) in under 6 weeks, and I could have read faster if I didn't have things I needed to do during the day. Yes there are a few controversial scenes which cause uproar such as Daphne's payback to the Duke for lying but to counterbalance that there is an immense amount of humor and humility that grounds the story and makes for an enjoyable and easy read (not to mention steamy when the moment calls for it.)

Around the time I started the first books my grandmother's dog passed away. "Nana" as I called her is over 80 and lonely as most older people are, I can't visit her everyday and the rest of my family doesn't pay her or my "papa" much attention. Anyways, she was so heartbroken, and knowing she loves a good story I set her up with the Bridgerton series on her kindle. When I went and saw her a few days later she was bright eyed and laughing and chattering endlessly about the book and how she couldn't stop reading and how it had allowed her a distraction from her pain and her thoughts about having lost her best friend. It's been 3 months now and she is a slower reader than me so is still reading the series (but getting close to the end!) And I can happily report she is doing well and I no longer worry about her getting too depressed and giving up on living like many older people do when they decide there's not enough in life to enjoy anymore.

I saw the Netflix show first and then had to read the book. I absolutely loved it! The story sucks you and the characters are all well developed, though each grows during the story due to their relationships. Reading these, each book made smile, laugh aloud, feel some tension, and had a sweet ending that I want from a romance. The third book in the the pack did make me want to smack Benedict several times though.
Now, the reason I gave it 4 stars is for me a big one. The sex scenes, or more specifically, the representation of female virginity as a physical barrier. I know that most romances due this, but it is grating to read and snaps me right out of the book. I truly wish that the author (and other romance authors) wrote virginity sex scenes more true to reality. No physical barrier that needs to be broken, no idea that a man can just tell a wan is a virgin due to a barrier, and that having sex for the first time doesn't always equal pain. But, that's very small part of the book.

After finally watching Bridgestone on Netflix, my daughter convinced me to read the books. She assured me they were much more detailed than the series- as is usually the case. The banter between the couples and the family is extraordinary. I found myself laughing out loud at times and almost crying at some parts. The writing is so detailed that it is easy to find oneself immersed in the story so deeply that reality blends into the background. I cannot wait to read on to Colin’s story now before the second part of season three comes back to Netflix in 2 weeks.

I loved all 3 stories. I watched the TV Show first and read the books until now. I am surprised how they differed from the book. I can't wait to watch Season 4 and see how they would tell Benedict and Sophie's story. Every time that I thought to myself, one more page, or one more chapter, something happened and it was very difficult to stop. Although this is a 5-star because I loved all 3 stories so much, I do think the 2nd Epilogues were a bit overkilled. I can understand why some people would like to know what happens 15 years later. But for me, the intriguing story is how they fall in love and get together. I quickly turned through the pages of the 2nd epilogue and could not get myself to read every word because I am so excited to continue with the next story.

What Julia does that kept me reading page after page, I’ll never know. I don’t go for romance but as a fan of the show I wanted to read the books and found myself devouring one per day all week! They are quick, fluffy, light reads with complex characters whose behavior is utterly simplistic. Weirdly gripping, definitely worth reading. She includes second epilogues at the end of each novel.

I bought these books to read after binging and falling in love with the tv series on Netflix. The first book and the first season do have a lot of similarities in the general plot line. The second season and second book are very different in a lot of ways. I think I prefer the show some, however, the books are a very enjoyable read. The heart of the characters and the Bridgerton family feels the same; so I look at is as different tellings of a tale. Much like the various versions of Cinderella out there. Ironically the third book in this series is a new take on a Cinderella tale. I was worried at first it would be boring as a retelling, but was done well.

Either way all the books are great read. They do not take away from the tv show if you saw that first, and I think the TV is a new inventive way to look at these stories. Both worth enjoying in their own right for the similarities and differences. The books are fun, and easy to ready. I am getting through them all pretty quickly and they are hard to put down.

The reason for one less star, and I may say this again later is the sex scenes. I was shocked they were written by a woman. I get all women in this time were virgins, and that taking a women's virginity would be called taking her maidenhead. However, please let this writer understand that is not how the female hymen works. There is a whole video from the show Adam Ruins Everything that explains it all. She should watch it.

Book one, "The Duke and I" - not my favorite, but the characters were fun and well-written and I enjoyed reading about the entire family dynamic when it came up in each scene. The hero had some more than frustrating moments and the heroine's naivete was annoying at times, but believable.

Book two "The Viscount Who Loved Me" - OMG, the best one by far of the first three. LOVED the development of Anthony as a main character and Kate was the perfect foil for him. Loved their growing relationship and the sweet moments were so sweet. Just loved so much.

Book Three "An Offer from a Gentleman" - wasn't terribly invested in Benedict as a character and he had some less than stellar moments in this book. But overall, it was a sweet, romantic build-up and I loved the HEA

Overall, I look forward to reading more in the series. Quite enjoyed all of them together and the family offers a great cast of characters to get through.
