PIECES OF HER

What if the person you thought you knew best turns out to be someone you never knew at all . . . ?

Andrea knows everything about her mother, Laura. She knows she’s spent her whole life in the small beachside town of Belle Isle; she knows she’s never wanted anything more than to live a quiet life as a pillar of the community; she knows she’s never kept a secret in her life. Because we all know our mothers, don’t we?

But all that changes when a trip to the mall explodes into violence and Andrea suddenly sees a completely different side to Laura. Because it turns out that before Laura was Laura, she was someone completely different. For nearly thirty years she’s been hiding from her previous identity, lying low in the hope that no one would ever find her. But now she’s been exposed, and nothing will ever be the same again.

The police want answers and Laura’s innocence is on the line, but she won’t speak to anyone, including her own daughter. Andrea is on a desperate journey following the breadcrumb trail of her mother’s past. And if she can’t uncover the secrets hidden there, there may be no future for either one of them. . . .

Review

“A propulsive, high-stakes thriller rife with intrigue and suspense.” — USA Today

“The ever-popular crime novelist is back with another pulse-pounding standalone, this one considering the twisted relationship between a mother and a daughter after the latter realizes she may not know the woman who gave birth to her at all.” — Entertainment Weekly on Pieces of Her

“[Slaughter’s] talent for writing convincingly flawed yet sympathetic characters is in high relief here... Readers will find themselves totally immersed in the suspenseful, alternating story lines and won’t want either of them to end.”
Booklist (starred review) on Pieces of Her

“All of Slaughter’s books... are satisfyingly surprising and plausible, but it’s Slaughter’s prodigious gifts of characterization that make her stand out among thriller writers.... Slaughter’s satirical touches are as deft as her grimmer renditions of real life.” — Washington Post

“If you’re into mystery thrillers, then you’re into Karin Slaughter.”  — theSkimm

“Enter the world of Karin Slaughter. Just be forewarned, there’s no going back.” — Lisa Ko, author of The Leavers

“Breathtaking…. Fiction doesn’t get any better than this.” — Jeffery Deaver

“Simply one of the best thriller writers working today. I’d follow her anywhere.” — Gillian Flynn

“It’s a compelling story that swept me along, unable to resist and unable to stop reading.” — Suspense Magazine on Pieces of Her

“With an intrigue and suspense-filled plot, Slaughter’s well-crafted, tense, and exhilarating story will keep readers on the edge of their seats.” — Library Journal on Pieces of Her

“Karin Slaughter has – by far – the best name of all of us mystery novelists. More to the point, The Good Daughter is Karin Slaughter’s most ambitious, most emotional, and best novel. So far, anyway.”   — James Patterson on The Good Daughter

“This is a great writer at the peak of her powers. Karin Slaughter is at her nail biting, heart stopping, emotionally draining best.” — Peter James on The Good Daughter

“A stunning family tragedy and a hold-your-breath pedal-to-the-metal thriller magically blended by Karin Slaughter’s trademark passion, intensity, and humanity. Certain to be a book of the year.” — Lee Child on Pretty Girls

“Searing, searching, soulful: a major achievement from a writer of extraordinary talents. Every Karin Slaughter novel is a cause for celebration—but simply put, Pretty Girls is the finest novel of her career.” — Kathy Reichs, #1 New York Times-bestselling author of Speaking in Bones, on Pretty Girls

“A hell-raising thriller . . . a genuinely exciting narrative driven by strong-willed female characters who can?t wait around until the boys shake the lead out of their shoes.” — New York Times Book Review on Pretty Girls

“But the success of writers like Gillian Flynn and Paula Hawkins and Karin Slaughter isn’t just due to the fact that they’re women... It’s about writers comprehending why women are so compelled by stories about brutal, graphic violence in the first place.” — The Atlantic

“It’s a top-notch story that will keep the reader engrossed from start to finish. Karin Slaughter is a fabulous writer and one thing I love with her books is she has a way of creating characters that you care about.” — Freshfiction.com

Karin Slaughter Does It Again

Karin Slaughter Does It Again
I am such a chicken! To me, a 'thriller' becomes a 'horror.' But, in a good way. And I read very slowly looking up terms it mentioned in Wikipedia, just to make it last longer. Wuss, but in a good way, me thinks. Karin Slaughter fascinates on all levels. Even when we might not enjoy one as much at first reading, the characters and events will draw you into reading it again. Sometimes we are not ready for the premises covered in a book. And then, something happens in our own life and the book tickles us to the point of greater understanding.

Pieces Of Her is about Andrea discovering the pieces of her mother she never knew. After Laura and Andrea are caught in a shoot out in the mall Andrea witnesses a side to her mother she had never known. This one event triggered the beginning of Andrea’s search for the truth.
The set of events that take place sends the reader on a very unexpected journey into the lives of Laura and Andrea Oliver who are mother and daughter. Andrea’s entire life is about to change and what she thought she knew of her life is about to blow her mind.
It took one spark to ignite the plan that consumed each of their lives. A past dating back to 1986 is where Andrea had to gather all the pieces of her mother’s life. As an amateur detective Andrea impressed me. As a thirty-one year living back at home floundering in life for a sense of purpose Andrea found her courage and strength on that journey to self discovery.
Laura didn’t allow what happened to her turn her into a victim. Laura is a survivor. Laura’s character was extremely complicated and complex. Her journey shocked me in the most wonderful way.

Pieces Of Her is a thrill novel about Laura and Andrea. The characters actions and behavior kept me alert. The dangerous activity fed my curiosity. Ms. Slaughter included some gory graphic murder scenes, but it was relevant to the cause. She offers a complicated storyline with complicated characters, yet it’s an easy read. The storyline while not an original concept is still unique with the way Ms. Slaughter delivered the information. She made it her own with unexpected twists and turns. The information presented allows the reader to formulate their own ideas and draw their own conclusions. Nothing is as it seems.
This is a powerful and intense story. I got sucked into these characters lives absorbing both the truth and lies.
This was one of those story’s you wanted to complete in one sitting, for if you took a break, you would lose your train of thought.

    Narrator:
Performed by Kathleen Early. She was the solo narrator performing this unabridged audiobook. The audiobook was performed in a soundproof facility offering a good quality listening experience. Kathleen voiced everyone of these characters with great skill and talent.

Keeps you engaged and gives you enough clues to predict what's going to happen so you're not completely lost but still in suspense wanting to know if your predictions are correct. Beautifully written.

I believe Karen Slaughter is a skilled writer. However, her books are deep. You really have to pay attention. I would also suggest that you wrote down the characters in this book as you go along. It is very difficult to follow, which made me lose interest multiple times. I did finish the book, but it was a struggle. I would not recommend this book unless you like to keep track of countless characters, like very convoluted story and don’t mind waiting until the very end to try to understand what actually happened.

Andrea Cooper knows everything about her mother Laura. She’s knows she’s spent her whole life in the small beachside town of Gullaway Island; she knows she’s never wanted anything more than to live a quiet life as a pillar of the community; she knows she’s never kept a secret in her life. Because we all know our mothers, don’t we?

But all that changes when a Saturday afternoon trip to the mall explodes into violence and Andrea suddenly sees a completely different side to Laura. Because it turns out that before Laura was Laura, she was someone completely different. For nearly thirty years she’s been hiding from her previous identity, lying low in the hope that no one will ever find her. But now she’s been exposed, and nothing will ever be the same again.

Twenty-four hours later Laura is in the hospital, shot by an intruder who’s spent thirty years trying to track her down and discover what she knows. Andrea is on a desperate journey following the breadcrumbs of her mother’s past. And if she can’t uncover the secrets hidden there, there may be no future for either one of them. . . .

My Thoughts: I was drawn into Pieces of Her because I loved the premise of the chasm between mothers and daughters, and how they keep parts of themselves hidden, even from those they love.

In her daughter Andrea’s eyes, Laura Oliver has had an ordinary existence, but then a violent episode in the mall drastically changes that view. Afterwards, Laura tells her daughter she needs to move out, now that she is thirty-one, and make it on her own. Blindsided by her mother’s actions, both at the mall and then afterwards, Andrea resists.

But suddenly something even more troubling happens a day later that sends Andrea on a quest to find answers. Her mother has given her very specific guidelines of where to go, and how to stay safe. Everything about these actions changes not only her view of her mother, but of her own existence.

I found this part of the novel intriguing, as Andrea tried to stay ahead of the danger, but kept finding herself in the midst of it because she had forgotten to do one or two of the things her mother had suggested.

Obviously Laura had quite a journey in her younger years, but it will take Andrea’s numerous and sometimes dangerous efforts to learn what her mother had done back then…and how she managed to survive.

The story also reminded me a little of other cults we saw in the 70s and 80s, and how the groups depend on the leadership of charismatic and dangerous men.

Who was Laura Oliver, and what were her defining moments? How did she manage to escape, and what did she still need to do to protect her daughter. An engaging read. 4.5 stars.

I really enjoyed Pieces of Her and found it very intriguing. This was my first Karin Slaughter book and it won’t be my last. I want to learn more about these characters and hope Andy continues to come into her own courageous woman that she showed she was in this book. Laura was such a puzzle and every times you found out more about her you just had to know more. Ultimately, it was clear what meant everything to her and that was Andy, her love for her and keeping her safe was everything to Laura. This book was a puzzle and i’m super glad to have stumbled across it, there was some great scenes, some sad scenes and a story that just pulled you in and had you needing to know what happened. I think the ending was fitting for this book, this story. Great read!

I’ve been a fan of Karin Slaughter, having read a few books in one of her thriller series. Her standalone thrillers, like this one, is as good.

There are a lot emotional outbursts between the characters, just like the characters in her other novels. What I like is the tone the author gives to each character, especially female characters - feisty, brave and loud. And headstrong.

This story is no exception, the characters are well built throughout the story. As I thought the story will come to a fighting end, there appears to be a stunning revelation I didn’t see it coming.

Good writing coupled with a good plot. It’s another good read.
