Guitar for Kids – Hal Leonard Guitar Method
A Beginner's Guide with Step-by-Step Instruction for Acoustic and Electric Guitar
by Bob Morris and Jeff Schroedl
Guitar for Kids is a fun, easy course that teaches children to play guitar faster than ever before. Popular songs such as 'Yellow Submarine,' 'Hokey Pokey,' 'I'm a Believer,' 'Surfin' U.S.A.,' 'This Land Is Your Land' and 'Hound Dog' keep students motivated, and the clean, simple page layouts ensure their attention remains focused on one concept at a time. The method is equally suitable for students using electric or acoustic guitars. It can be used in combination with a guitar teacher or parents, even if they've never had any musical training themselves. The accompanying online audio contains more than 30 tracks for demonstration and play-along and is accessed using the unique code printed inside each book. No tablature included.

He's happy, and making good progress. I couldn't have asked for more or better. We'll be working our way through the whole series.
1. It is paced well and covers all the basics in a systematic way that young kids understand.
2. The photos are large because that is developmentally appropriate for kids. One of the bad reviews criticized the photos, and they are enormously helpful to the students.
3. I LIKE focusing on the chords first because most amateur guitar players intend to use chord strumming, not plucking melodies. I personally, find the chords easy to learn as a beginner.
4. The SONG CHOICES are awesome! My students learned about the Beatles and some other performers with these more "current" song choices as opposed to folk songs they have never heard before.
The only thing I add as a teacher is the transition from easy "one finger" chords to the full chord fingerings.
I highly recommend this course, especially with a teacher to facilitate the learning. I give this my endorsement after having used it for 9 years in a school classroom. Hal Leonard got this one right.
I was somewhat disappointed by this book, I don't think you should pay more than $8 for it. I was hoping for more songs and notes, but this book is very limited. It starts by learning two 3 string chords and one four string chord with strumming. Then it moves to 7 single notes A-G on string 6 through 3. I think there are two better options below:
I actually prefer the Guitar Method Book 1 by Hal Leonard Hal Leonard Guitar Method Book 1: Book/CD Pack because it has more parts of songs, and it starts out with the single notes on string 5 and 6 to allow newbies to practice without the frustration of chords. Later it teaches more single notes, 10, on all strings. It also has many more chords than this book with many more tunes. What I really like about the Guitar Method Book 1 is that it gives new learners time to practice on the single notes before trying simple chords. It also takes them through a pretty solid foundation to start playing songs for practice. This book would be better for older children (8-9 years and older).
For younger children (5-7), I think the Alfred Complete Kids guitar book Kid's Guitar Course Complete (Book, Enhanced CD & DVD) (Alfred's Kid's Guitar Course) is a much better book and value as with much more instruction than Hal's Guitar for Kids, and more suited for the young learners. Its only flaw might be that it doesn't start as simple as Hal Leonard's Guitar Method books with learning just the single notes first. If it did, it would be the perfect book. Still, you can bounce around, and it does a very good job of self-teaching music by explaining everything with much more detail than any of the Hal Leonard books. This book is very colorful and more fun for a child because it has lots of cartoon pictures with the songs which make the kids laugh and makes learning music seem more fun. The songs start out very easy and progress to more difficult for a beginner. When you are done with this book you are ready to start Guitar Method Book 1 by Hal Leonard somewhere towards the later middle of the book.
Just one man's opinion.

Nine weeks later, and she's still plucking gamely away - largely, I think, because this book makes it all very straightforward and the kids end up learning to play songs rather than just playing an endless stream of unrelated chords, which makes it all that much more engaging.
The layout of the book and the instructions are clear, easy to follow and logical and even in the course of nine weeks - thanks also to her weekly lesson - we've heard real improvement in her playing. The price makes it good value for money and I'd recommend it as an additional source of support to anyone who's having lessons or as a standalone 'teach yourself' book.
One minor issue is that the tuning notes are all on one track which means you have to keep skipping back to get the tuning right. I would have preferred each note on its own track but a small issue with such a great book.
