The City: The Jane Harvest Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 9 ratings

Winning battles means Ink honors, prestige, and life itself. …Yet nobody understands what losing truly means.

On another planet two hundred years in the future, twenty-one-year-old Isla Jane struggles helplessly to figure out who she is and what her world really means. Marked with a forbidden tattoo of the rising sun, she is a natural champion of humanity and a gifted warrior in Heats– lavish battles fought in the conjoined minds of the participants for the morbid amusement of the masses.

Despite Isla’s desire to fade into the background, she emerges as an obvious leader of her people when the senseless assassination of a youth forces her to face the truth. Her volatile world, disguised by its elaborate battles and constant mayhem, is a prison without bars and a coffin, the lid already half-closed, that they must escape.

But when she vows to find a way to bring her people back home, Isla will have to deconstruct consciousness and the very nature of the space time continuum to unravel good from evil, truth from lies, and survival from true love.

A. Nicky Hjort is originally from Arlington, Texas- the second of five siblings, all of whom have strong creative talents. She currently lives in central California where she practices medicine as an Ob/GYN. In between being a lovingly devoted mother and caring for women, she writes stories that cross multiple genre lines- from Sci Fi to high fantasy, but all of her stories have thriller and strong romantic components. And for her clever reader, all of her manuscripts are subtly connected to each other, with their purpose to explore all facets of Love and Light. She likes to say that her stories write themselves, and in the process, often write her, or at least the next version of her hoping to emerge. A lover of all the arts, A. Nicky Hjort hopes her stories might inspire you to find your inner creative genius.

As for her heroes- they are as varied and eclectic as her choice of narrative genres, but when pushed to list her favorite influences, she would say James Patterson, Barbara Kingsolver, Patricia Cornwell, Dean Koontz, Gene Roddenberry, Shel Silverstein, Suzanne Collins, and Walt Disney.

Def. Dystopia: an imaginary place where unhappy people lead dehumanized and often fearful lives because they are not treated fairly.
I will admit up front that this is not the genre I usually seek out to read. Dystopia perfectly describes the location and lives of the main characters in The City: The Jane Harvest. However, after reading the Prologue, I had to know what became of 53-year-old Dr. Jane Dawn, Chief Officer of War Medicine, NASA.
At that point, the reader is immediately thrust 150 years later in the City, specifically in FDA testing site 32. Dr. Jane Dawn, now known as Isla Jane, is given an assignment in the Biome Repair Elixir department of the Foundry, where she is “trying not to blow up, not to die, not to disappear into nothingness, not to think, not to do anything other than survive.” And, try, Isla does! Over and over, and just when you think she has possibly met her end, she beats the odds as she tries to find her way back Home. I will not offer any spoilers here other than to say:
If you are fond of dystopian novels that extend far into the future, you will like this book.
If you find the notion of a cryo-chamber interesting, you will like this book.
If you like an explicit/extended copulation scene, you will like this book.
If you are interested in robotic artificial intelligence, you will like this book.
If you like to read novels peppered with the F word and similar language, you will like this book.
If you are a film maker looking to make a movie the likes of Divergent or The Hunger Games, you will like this book.
If you are a truth seeker, you will like this book.
If you have ever struggled to find your way back to what you call Home, you will like this book.
I find in reading other fiction by author Nicky Hjort, i.e.; A Sinister Bouquet: Awakening and A Sinister Vision: This Much Is True, her masterful use of simile and metaphor works equally well in this novel. Her descriptions are so clear and precise that you can see and hear all the action. I am eager to read Book 3 in her Sinister Series and more from The City.

I truly loved this book. It is so well written and full of wonderful details that will pull you into Isla’s world and keep you guessing right along with her to the very last word. The world created is completely orginal and well developed. Just phenomenal. This book would be an amazing movie. I can see it so clearly in my mind. The planet, the buildings, the characters, all the tiny details, and the battles would be visually stunning. I’m such a fan of A. Nicky Hjort, and The City is another fantastic read from a very talented author. I can’t wait for the next book in the series and any other works by Nicky. Excellent, exciting, thought-provoking, enthralling read!

*I received a copy of this book to be honestly reviewed*

Well, this was really good! I loved the world that was created here, and I found the special aspects and nuances of this dystopian land intriguing. The main character's inner monologue and self talk was one of my favorite things, though. It was really a cool way to humanize her in a world where that's not much of a thing lol. The Orb felt a bit Hunger Games-ish to me, but it had its own thing going on, a different way of playing the game, and I thoroughly enjoyed the tension that built up.

And I want more.

I think fans of Dystopian worlds will enjoy this.

This book was outstanding! In this book, you can find romance, mystery, action, and a solid story line all wrapped up in Sci-Fi. This book sweeps you away to The city, and almost gives a hunger games type feeling to it, but with an original twist. There is so much detail in this book that I can actually visualize everything as I am reading it. I don’t want to give anything away, but this book was an exceptional escape from reality for a while and I think I finished it in about three days because I just could not put it down. I loved that it didn’t skip around too much and that there were so many puzzles in the book for me to try and figure out. I did not expect the ending! I cannot wait for the second one! You MUST read this!

I sincerely want more!! I just had a blast reading this story. I felt it was gripping and anyone who is a fan of the dystopian/thriller genres would enjoy. It's somewhat similar to other dystopian novels, as it's hard to be completely original, however I found Hjort's tone gave this story something different that I enjoyed exploring as I read each new page.

I received an arc of this book and am voluntarily reviewing.
