This was a story that was difficult to set aside, as the story was very captivating. Having grown up in a village, I found the characters and setting of a small rural town to be very credible. The author provides enough description to enable the reader to connect with the characters and setting to bring the story alive without distracting from the intriguing plot.

This is an easy-to-read, well-paced murder mystery that will resonate in particular with anyone who lives or grew up in a small town. The writer perfectly captures those unique small-town dynamics - their observations are spot on! The twist at the end was unexpected and perfectly brought to a satisfying conclusion an enjoyable read by a skilled writer.

I hope we hear more of Shells Harbour returnee-turned-detective Penny in the future as the book suggests we haven’t heard the last of her!

For anyone who wonders what goes on in a small Nova Scotia town in the winter, or really anyone who just likes an engaging mystery - Where There's Smoke is for you. Well told with engaging characters and a twisty plot. You'll cheer for Penny, Arlene and Jacob, want to share a cup of tea with Esi and fall in love with Sheila. This is a lovely, lovely novel.
