AF Stewart is a poet and author from Nova Scotia. Over the years, I've gotten quite familiar with her and her work, so it's no wonder that when I hear the words "dark poetry" she immediately comes to mind. Stewart uses verse to paint in the colors of blood and blade and shadow, and her latest collection "Horror Haiku and Other Poems" is a spectacular canvas, indeed.

True to the spirit of haiku, her poems each have a reference to nature—the moonlit night, the cold depth of ocean, the dampness of earth and stone. Others offer a glimpse of a deeper, perhaps hidden (perhaps not-so-hidden) nature—the nature of man, of beast, of evil.

And cutting words! In some pieces they are quite literal (and so creepy they make me smile). In others, they are subtle but impactful. You feel the cut most sharply after you read it, absorb it, and process it.

My favorite poem of the collection is a great example of this:

Darkest deep, unvoiced
beneath cracked civility
until the blood spills
--by AF Stewart, "Horror Haiku and Other Poems"

See the twist, the moment everything changes? That's what makes it haiku. The dread that seeps under your skin once you read it...that's what makes it horror.

The poems are accompanied by hauntingly beautiful photography and artwork, which add another layer to the splendor of the book. You can also find links to sites online that showcase Stewart's verses and accompanying artwork. Overall, a wonderful book just in time for the darkest days of the year.

I have always loved the Haiku form and A.F. Stewart's Horror Haiku is terrific. Her choice of words is sublime and each poem creates a feeling of dread. I enjoyed the imagery and the photographs that accompanied each piece.

Horror Haiku and Other Poems, by A.F. Stewart was my first real venture into Haiku. But I'm a horror girl at heart and happy to try something new.

I didn't know what to expect, and I was not disappointed at all. I loved it!

Ms. Stewart's words were beautifully dark and macabre. A photograph preceded each Haiku which was a bonus that I enjoyed. I went back and read it again, because I didn't appreciate the accompanying photos the first time as much as I should have, because I was concentrating on the verse.

There's also links to a blog that showcase Ms. Stewarts's work with drawn illustrations that I thought offered a different perspective on the Haiku which was interesting.

As a huge fan of Victorian Gothic Horror one of my favorite verses was:

London gaslight hiss
cobblestone shadows shiver
and the undead walk.

Everything you need to know is right there.

I'm so glad that I read this book. I've discovered a whole new way to enjoy my horror. I couldn't be happier!

The haiku were deftly written. In just three lines, Stewart managed to paint a vivid picture in my head. There are pictures to correspond with the poetry, but the poetry is so well done they were like icing on the cake. The other section in the book featuring longer poems was just as good. I will definitely be rereading this book and checking out Stewart's other works.
